Psychosynthesis Counselling and Psychotherapy

Traditionally psychotherapy has attempted to trace the origin of disease in order to take remedial action. Psychosynthesis agrees that whilst the source of many symptoms may be located in the past, not all distress can be explained in this way.

Some symptoms such as lack of meaning in life, alienation, or loss of identity, may not be of a neurotic nature but point rather to existential crises. These symptoms therefore carry within them positive messages which are seeking to express themselves in our lives. It is the appreciation that a symptom contains meaning and can be a healthy phenomenon that the psychosynthesis approach has to offer.

Therapists working within the Psychosynthesis context meet the needs of people who are dealing with many different types of crises or transitions in their lives. It may be a difficulty with deep and intimate relationships; the continuing struggle with early childhood traumas and abuses; or it may be the sense of alienation from society that many young adults experience at this time. It may be the pointlessness and confusion that overwhelms many on reaching mid-life. It may be the reactions to a religious or spiritual awakening. People who know they are not 'ill' in the ordinary sense but yet need help in discovering their own inner direction and sense of purpose in life.

Graduates and students of the Institute of Psychosynthesis working in the Clinic therefore are trained to work in depth with individuals in order to create a context for living which includes and integrates not only impulses in terms of sex, aggression, but also the very human impulses towards beauty, truth, compassion and joy.
